ASPIRE STAFF MEMBERS 2022

There is a synergy in how the Aspire to be Deadly Team works. Each team member is committed and works towards a shared goal. Our team embraces diversity, has a strong commitment to cultural understanding and needs, is balanced around youth and energy, experience and patience and overall aims to deliver strong outcomes. We are committed to upskilling and training and each of us brings out the best is each other. Meet the Aspire to be Deadly Team:

Julie McNeil

General Manager – Community Partnerships/Aspire and Governance Aspire

Julie McNeil is the CEO of Aspire Cairns Community Limited (Aspire), a registered charity and a social enterprising looking to support the disadvantaged youth using sport to drive positive social outcomes. Aspire has signed a MOU with Cairns Hockey and is providing a variety of services to drive funding outcomes and to assist in building capacity, delivering funding outcomes, supporting community services, supporting the strategic outcomes including increasing Indigenous and multi-cultural membership within CHA. Julie manages the business, staff, and governance, delivers the reports and compliance matters, oversees the collection of data, financials, stakeholder, and partner engagement, driving outcomes, strategic planning and reviews, grant and govt funding, promotion, education, and training advancement, mentoring and assessment with grant funding applications, building Gift Funds and charitable donations. Julie is currently a member of the FIH Sustainable Programs Task Force, is a member of the Oceania Hockey Federation Development and Education Committee, is part of the committee driving Hook in4 Health, is a member with Jess Fatnowna on Hockey Australia Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group and is a member of the Cairns Hockey Facility Management Team. Jess Fatnowna

Local Programs, Administration Support and Program Mentor

Jess Fatnowna has developed into a great program mentor and in 2022 she will be providing mentor support and delivery through Empower Me Programs Cairns West School, Trinity Bay School Program, Bentley Park School Program, Cape York Girls Academy, School to Club, data collection and reporting and special projects. Jess is advancing her training with our partner school Cairns West State School and through this collaboration, we will strengthen programs. Jess will work up to 20 hours per week in the program and she is at Aspire Offices upstairs old clubhouse and can be contacted below.

Sawadu Tabuai

Aspire Schools Support and Program Mentor

Sawadu Tabuai family comes from Saibai Island in the Torres Strait and Sawadu has just returned from leave spent on Saibai. Well rested, Sawadu is expanding her delivery opportunities in 2022 and increases her hours to a full-time position and Aspire Development Officer. Sawadu will be driving and delivering Safer Streets Programs, Cairns West School Program, Trinity Bay School Program and supporting Bentley Park School Program, Cape York Girls Academy, Deadly 5’s, data collection, reporting, and special projects. Sawadu will be mentoring in the community hub and School to Club programs. Sawadu is advancing his professional skills in 2022 and will undertake a Certificate 4 in Business – Leadership – supported by Aspire Sawadu works at the Aspire Offices upstairs old clubhouse and can be contacted below.

Wesley Ferns

Regional and Remote Communities Program Coordinator

Wesley Ferns returns in 2022 to drive the Regional Programs across Torres St, Gulf Savannah and Cape York and is committed to advancing and strengthening the Deadly 5’s Program. Wes works full time and will also assists in the Hook in4 Health Training, supporting the Aspire Schools and Community Hub and School to Club. Wes is a skilled coach and mentor and is also building his capacity in program management and leadership. Wes is advancing his professional skills in 2022 and will undertake a Certificate 4 in Business – Leadership – supported by Aspire. Stephanie Bonel

Aspire Promotion Coordinator and Mentor

Stephanie Bonel began working with Aspire in 2021 and in 2022 Stephanie returns in a shared role with Cairns Hockey. Stephanie will be working up to 12 hours a week with the Aspire team driving the School to Club program and admin mentoring, she will also be supporting the community hub. In her capacity with CHA, Stephanie will also assist Aspire media and promotions. Stephanie will work from the CHA office and can be contacted below.

David McNeil

Aspire Educator and Mentor

David McNeil is a FIH Level 3 Coach and Coach Educator and with his skills developed through coaching and in private enterprise in training, David takes on the role as Aspire Educator and Mentor and will be available to mentor, support and upskill Aspire staff and participants. He is driving the Oceania Hook in4 Health Hockey Leaders Training Sessions and supports rep and pathway programs. David is reducing his hours and is available 15-18 hours per week and he will be working in the Aspire office upstairs in the old clubhouse each Tuesday and Wednesday and other times as required. ASPIRE PROGRAM AMBASSADORS 2022

Aspire to be Deadly are very proud of the students and the staff involved in our program. As our young people embark on their individual journeys, our Ambassadors give back to the program and share their challenges, their successes and most importantly they keep connected to the young people within Aspire to be Deadly, so we all get better together. Meet our current Ambassadors:

Lisa Fatnowna

Lisa started with the Aspire to be Deadly Program as a school-based trainee and worked through to become a program mentor. Lisa represented Australian Country Under 21 Hockey Team, Queensland Country Hockey Team and Cairns Hockey Representative Teams through her performance career. Lisa is now contracted to IMG in Sydney and is embarking on a modelling career. You can follow Lisa on the Aspire to Be Deadly Ambassadors Journey Blog.

Carleah Flinders

Carleah started with the Aspire to be Deadly Program as a role model and mentor to young people and is completing teaching support studies to continue her work mentoring young people. Carleah has modelled at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, been involved in artistic workshops and mentored Aspire to be Deadly students. Carleah now resides in Sydney and has agreed to the an Aspire Ambassador and we can follow her journey on Aspire to be Deadly Ambassadors Journey Blog.

Sarah Cochran

Sarah has been supporting the Aspire to be Deadly Program for many years through her education pathway. Sarah completed Grade 12 in 2020 and has moved to Brisbane to advance her hockey journey while completing a certificate course in education support. Sarah has represented Cairns and Queensland at State and National Titles. Sarah will continue to share her journey with our Aspire to be Deadly Program Participants from Brisbane.
